SHONA THOMSON
Curator and Producer, A Kind of Seeing

Key Expertise: Programming, Audience Engagement and Education, Event Production, Marketing, Monitoring and Evaluation
Shona has been producing and curating across film exhibition, archives and heritage, live performance, and strategic cultural consultation and research for over 20 years in the UK and internationally. With a programming specialism in touring archive and silent film with live music, Shona develops projects from fundraising to evaluation as a sole trader under the banner of A Kind of Seeing working closely with funders, performers, and a wide range of community and audience partners in tour locations.
Shona’s A Kind of Seeing work has included a long association with the Edinburgh International Film Festival, new curatorial commissions in collaboration with Glasgow Film Festival, producing the first five years of the Hippodrome Silent Film Festival in Bo’ness, major Scottish and UK live cinema tours as part of BFI’s Britain on Film programme, and archive film exhibition consultancy for the British Council in Vietnam.
In parallel to A Kind of Seeing projects, Shona worked as an executive personal assistant for 10 years in both the commercial and public sectors and now continues doing client-led work in cinema development at Regional Screen Scotland and postgraduate teaching in film exhibition and curation at the University of Edinburgh.
Shona specialises in programming archive film and silent film with live performance curating film events with an emphasis on place: connecting where the films were originally made (and by whom) and where they’re being screened.
Through post-screening blethers (informal audience discussions with local guests/experts) Shona works with audiences in the communities the films are screened to use the past to talk about the future, such as on the BFI Britain on Film-funded series of three tours Made in My Toun, Made on Our Land and Made by the Sea tour:

She is currently working on the project Launch! On the Sea with Scotland's Lifeboats which is part-funded by Film Hub Scotland. Shona also re-purposes archive film to create new works such as the music video and projected visuals for folk singer songwriter’s new album tour of The Living Mountain:
