FAN Advisor: Paid opportunity
Overview
We are seeking to widen our portfolio of film exhibition advisors to provide one-on-one advice sessions as part of the BFI Film Audience Network’s Advice & Experience Scheme. Advisors can be freelance consultants, or run/work for a film exhibitor. Sessions are booked on an ad-hoc basis, with advisors completing approximately 3 sessions a year. BFI Film Audience Network (FAN)
The BFI Film Audience Network is a unique collaboration of eight Film Hubs managed by leading film organisations across the UK. The Film Audience Network is at the heart of the BFI’s latest strategy BFI2022 which seeks to ensure the greatest choice of film is available for everyone.
Film Hubs are regional networks of cinemas, festivals and other exhibition organisations working together to develop a thriving and inclusive film exhibition sector. It is free for exhibitors to join their local Hub and membership offers a range of benefits including training, financial support, access to special film seasons and programmes, networking opportunities and much more.
Areas of expertise
We are looking for advisors each with their own set of skills and expertise, gained through working experience. This could include marketing, audience development, technical skills, programming, diversity and more. See person specification below for expanded list.
Technical Skills
For the first time the portfolio will also include advisors for technical skills, e.g. sound and projection. Similar provision was previously provided by the ICO’s Technical Skills for Digital Exhibition scheme, now ended.

The day rate is £250 (+VAT if applicable).
Each session is anticipated to be equivalent to one day, however this will vary depending on travel time to the session:
FAN will also cover your travel/accommodation/subsistence expenses.

Role description:
- Attend one-on-one advice sessions across the UK, in the form of half day site visits or phone/Skype conversations.
- Provide advice to Hub members: professionals and volunteers working in film exhibition, particularly particular those with an interest in screening a broad range of cultural cinema. This could include cinemas, community cinemas and clubs, film festivals and film societies.
- Research participating organisation prior to advice sessions.
- Write follow-up report summarising the session.
Person specification:
- Demonstrated skills and expertise in one or more areas of film exhibition. Areas of expertise could include:
- Audience Development
- Audience engagement and education
- Bid-writing/Fundraising
- Budgets and Financial Management
- Business Development
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
- Income generation
- Marketing
- Monitoring and evaluation
- Programming
- Public Speaking
- Rural and community cinema
- Technical skills: Projection, sound, AV etc.
- Working with Staff and Volunteers
- Young People
- Or other
- At least 5 years’ experience working in film exhibition.
- Currently a freelance consultant, or run or work for a film exhibition organisation.
- Based in the UK.
- Available to travel and attend meetings across the country.
Payment:
The day rate is £250 (+VAT if applicable).
Each session is anticipated to be equivalent to one day, however this will vary depending on travel time to the session:
- 0.25 day for preparation
- 0.5 day for the session
- 0.25 day for writing a short summary report
FAN will also cover your travel/accommodation/subsistence expenses.
